Judy Appel, Executive Director

Ms. Appel has worked for over 20 years working for nonprofits both nationally and internationally on a variety of different issues and has extensive experience working on educational equity and inclusion. A charismatic activist with roots in San Francisco, the East Bay, and Sacramento, Ms. Appel has extensive experience in organizational management, policy and program development, litigation, and public education.
Judy previously worked as the Director of Legal Affairs for the Drug Policy Alliance, a national, non-profit organization dedicated to reducing the harm caused by drugs and drug policies. Prior to that Ms. Appel founded the Civil Rights Legal Division of the Coalition on Homelessness in San Francisco and worked in the private sector. Ms. Appel is currently an active member of the Welcoming Schools National Advisory Board, San Francisco Family Support, California Safe Schools Coalition and LGBT Health and Social Service Network steering committees. She has served on many boards of directors and public committees, including Boards of Directors of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, Oakland Civil Liberties Alliance, and Coalition on Homelessness, and served the San Francisco Board of Supervisors’ Sunshine Ordinance Task Force. Ms. Appel received her JD from UC Hastings College of Law and her Masters in City and Regional Planning from UC Berkeley.
Ms. Appel and her partner live in Berkeley and have a thirteen year-old son and nine year-old daughter.
