Our Family Coalition promotes the civil rights and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender families with children and prospective parents through education, advocacy, social networking and grassroots community organizing.

Our Family Coalition was formed through the 2002 merger of two organizations serving lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender families – the Berkeley-based Our Family and San Francisco-based All Our Families Coalition (AOFC). Our Family was founded in 1994 by a group of East Bay lesbian and gay parents with infants as a social/educational organization for LGBT families. AOFC was formed in 1996 by and for LGBT families to both provide families with services and referrals that addressed their needs and helped them support each other and to build the resources and structures that enabled LGBT families to advocate for themselves in their communities. Since 2002 we have grown to over 600 member families, with many more participating in our activities and employing our services.

Today Our Family Coalition provides a variety of vehicles for LGBT families with children to engage effectively in public education and advocacy efforts that challenge the bias and discrimination that affects them. We aim to reach a diverse grassroots base of LGBT families where they are and engage them in challenging the many societal barriers they face. Our work includes:

  • Media and advocacy efforts to change public perception and public policy through organizing parents to advocate on behalf of LGBT families in the media and in political forums.
  • Training parents to advocate directly with a variety of institutions on behalf of their children, in order to create safe and welcoming environments for their children (e.g., in schools and medical settings).
  • Producing public and community educational materials including a quarterly newsletter, a bi-weekly e-newsletter and hosting three discussion listservs for parents to network and share resources with each other.
  • Educational programming responsive to members’ needs, on both LGBT-specific and more general parenting issues within an LGBT-sensitive environment to build a more informed and active membership.
  • Holding social forums and events that facilitate the development of social support networks for LGBT parents and their children and allow the children to see their families reflected in others around them.
